About Mithril Law

The basics about how we work and what makes us different.

What exactly is an "AI-powered law firm"?

We use automation and AI tools to handle the tedious parts of legal work—document drafting, research, case analysis—so our lawyers can focus on strategy and results. You get faster service, lower costs, and the same quality legal work. Think of it as having a legal team with superpowers.

Are you real lawyers or just a legal tech company?

Real lawyers. Jonathan K. is licensed with the Law Society of Ontario (LSO). We use technology to enhance our practice, not replace legal expertise. You always have a human lawyer responsible for your case.

How much do your services cost?

It depends on the complexity, but we're transparent about pricing upfront. Small claims start around $500, employment matters from $1,500, startup packages from $2,500. No surprise bills, no endless billable hours. Get a quote during your intake.

Why should I choose you over a traditional law firm?

Speed, cost, and results. Traditional firms bill by the hour and take forever because inefficiency is profitable for them. We bill by outcomes and use technology to deliver faster. You get better service at a fair price.

What if my case is too complex for AI assistance?

Complex cases often benefit most from our approach—AI helps us analyze massive amounts of case law and precedents quickly. But if your matter truly requires traditional full-service representation, we'll refer you to trusted colleagues and be honest about it.

Small Claims Court

Recovering what you're owed shouldn't cost more than the debt itself.

What's the maximum I can claim in Ontario Small Claims Court?

$50,000 as of January 1, 2024 (raised from $35,000 under O. Reg. 491/21). This is the maximum principal amount — interest and costs are additional.

How long does a small claims case take?

Typically 3-6 months if uncontested, 6-12 months if defended. We help speed things up by filing everything correctly the first time and using automated follow-ups.

What if the debtor has no money to pay?

Getting a judgment is step one. Collecting is step two. We help with enforcement options like garnishing wages, bank accounts, or seizing assets. Sometimes the threat of enforcement is enough.

Can I sue someone in another province?

Yes, but it's complicated. Generally you sue where the debt arose or where the debtor lives/does business. We can help navigate jurisdiction issues and determine the best venue.

What documents do I need to start a claim?

Depends on the type of debt. For contracts: the agreement and proof of breach. For services: invoices and correspondence. For damages: evidence of loss. We'll help you gather everything during intake.

Is it worth hiring a lawyer for small claims?

For under $5,000, maybe not with a traditional firm. With us? Absolutely. Our automated processes keep costs low while dramatically improving your chances of success and collection.

Employment Law

Your employer has lawyers. You should too.

How much notice am I entitled to if I'm fired?

In Ontario: minimum notice per the Employment Standards Act, but often much more under common law. Factors include age, length of service, position level, and ability to find similar work. We calculate your entitlement accurately.

What's the difference between being fired and being laid off?

Legally, there's often no difference—both can be wrongful dismissal if done without proper notice or pay in lieu. "Layoff" sounds nicer but doesn't reduce your entitlements.

Can I be fired for any reason in Ontario?

Almost any reason, but they still owe you notice or pay unless it's for cause (serious misconduct). "At-will" employment doesn't exist in Canada like it does in the US.

Should I sign the severance package they offered?

Never sign immediately. Most initial offers are below your entitlements. Once you sign, you can't negotiate more. Have us review it first—consultations are free.

How long do I have to sue for wrongful dismissal?

Two years from termination in Ontario, but don't wait. Evidence disappears, witnesses forget, and your employer hopes you'll give up. Start early.

What if I was fired for cause?

Cause is hard to prove and often fabricated after the fact. Just because they say "for cause" doesn't make it true. We review the circumstances and challenge invalid cause allegations.

Can my employer change my job duties or cut my pay?

Significant changes without your consent can be constructive dismissal—you're entitled to notice as if you were fired. Don't just quit; get legal advice about your options.

Startup & Corporate Law

Building a company shouldn't require a law degree.

Should I incorporate or operate as a sole proprietorship?

Incorporation protects your personal assets and provides tax advantages, but costs more to set up and maintain. For most businesses expecting revenue over $50K annually, incorporation makes sense.

Federal or provincial incorporation?

Provincial (Ontario) for most businesses—cheaper and simpler. Federal only if you plan to operate in multiple provinces immediately or want name protection across Canada.

How do I protect my business idea?

Ideas alone can't be protected, but specific implementations can. Consider trademarks for branding, copyrights for creative work, patents for inventions, and NDAs for sensitive discussions.

What equity split should I offer my co-founder?

Depends on what each person brings—idea, capital, expertise, connections, risk. 50/50 is common but not always fair. We help structure equity that reflects actual contributions and includes vesting.

Do I need a shareholders' agreement?

Yes, especially with co-founders. It's like a prenup for business—defines what happens if someone wants out, dies, or causes problems. Cheaper to do upfront than fix later.

When do I need to start thinking about employee contracts?

Before your first hire. Proper employment agreements protect you from wrongful dismissal claims and ensure you own the work they create. Don't use generic templates.

How much should I budget for legal costs in my first year?

For a simple startup: $2,500-5,000 including incorporation, basic agreements, and trademark filing. Complex businesses with multiple founders, IP, or regulatory issues need more.

Intellectual Property

Your ideas are worth protecting. Here's how.

What's the difference between copyright, trademark, and patent?

Copyright protects creative works (writing, art, code), trademarks protect brand identifiers (names, logos), patents protect inventions. Different purposes, different protections.

Do I automatically own the copyright to work I create?

Usually, but not if you created it as an employee or contractor without proper agreements. Work-for-hire and contractor relationships can transfer ownership automatically.

Should I trademark my business name?

If you plan to build a brand around it, yes. Trademarks prevent others from using confusingly similar names in the same industry. Registration gives you stronger protection than just using the name.

How long does trademark registration take?

In Canada: 12-18 months if no objections. We handle the entire process including searching for conflicts, filing applications, and responding to office actions.

Can I patent my app or software?

Maybe. Software patents are tricky—you need a novel technical solution, not just a business method. Most apps don't qualify, but some do. We assess patentability before you spend money filing.

Someone is using my copyrighted work without permission. Now what?

Document the infringement, register your copyright if you haven't already, then send a cease and desist letter. Many cases settle at this stage. Litigation is expensive but sometimes necessary.

How much does trademark registration cost?

Government fees: $330-530 CAD depending on how you file. Our service fee: $1,500 all-in including search, application, and handling any office actions. No surprises.
